John David Ivor Hughes was born in Nottingham in 1885. He attended Nottingham High School and in 1904 went to Aberystwyth to attend lectures in law with a view to qualifying as a barrister. He soon moved to London and was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1910. In 1911 he went up to Balliol and took a first in law in 1914. He then read for a B.C.L., which he took in 1915, and was awarded the Vinerian Scholarship. During the First World War he served with a Friends' Ambulance Unit and in 1919...
