John David Ivor Hughes was born in Nottingham in 1885. He attended Nottingham High School and in 1904 went to Aberystwyth to attend lectures in law with a view to qualifying as a barrister. He soon moved to London and was called to the bar at Middle Temple in 1910. In 1911 he went up to Balliol and took a first in law in 1914.
